The Stone Forest in Shilin county of Kunming city enjoys a high reputation in the world, is regarded the No.1 Wonder in the world, the First Marvelous Spectacle in the world Every year millions of tourists both at home and abroad come to visit it. The Stone Forest is situated on the southeast of Kunming city, about 80km away from Kunming, about 1750 meters above sea level, is the typical Karst landscape. According to the scientific appraisal, in the 270 million yeas ago, the Stone Forest was the sedimentary area on the sea floor. Because of the crust's movements, the sea floor rose and the rock (the abundant microbe died and heap up) also rose out of the sea; the effect of the Himalayas movement raised the rocks again, then after many years of corrosion and erosion by the rainwater, seawater and weathering, the stone peaks, stone columns, stone shoots and stone buds rose straight from the ground and joined together like a forest, hence the name Stone Forest. There are thousands of screen-like stone-hills standing together with a lot of green trees and numerous queer peaks and dangerous stones standing with different shapes and forms. Investigation reveals that the Stone Forest covers an area about 30,000 hectares, but just 350km square kilometer (200 hectares) of which have been developed. It consists of seven natural scenic areas: Two Forest, Two Caves, Two Lakes, and one Waterfall.
