I met Arden a couple of years ago while I was staying at the Sightseeing Hotel. He had been a guide for a while but only for the Chinese tourist.  He was now improving his English so that he could begin to take the many foreign tourists that now come to the area.  Ardens family is from a small village just outside of Yangshuo.  It is said to be one of the oldest villages in the area.  Ardens's family lives in one of the largest and oldest houses in the village.   His family has lived there for more then 600 years.  Arden's English has improved greatly and his knowledge of the area can not be surpassed by anyone.  If you want to go rafting, biking, hiking, sighting seeing Arden is the man to see in YANGSHUO.

YI MA VILLAGE

Yi Ma village is near the Yulong River, about 3 km from the city of Yangshuo.  About 30 families live there.  It is one of the oldest villages in the area.  Dating back over 600 years.  There is a Tang Dynasty wall and many Qing Dynasty stone buildings.  The Qing Dynasty buildings all have very interesting rooftop decorations, with carved figures and animals.  Their doorways are also very unique.  One of the oldest houses belongs to Arden¡¯s family.  His family has lived there for over 600 years.  Inside the old part of the farmhouse you will find a living museum.  He has preserved old fishing coats, rice mills, children¡¯s toys and many other things.  The village is a typical combination of the old and the new.  Also in the village is a wonderful little garden with have big water lily pond.

YULONG RIVER

The Yulong River is a branch of the Li River.  It got its name from an ancient story about a scholar trying to get to Beijing.  This scholar was on his way to Beijing for his exam when he got to the area it had rained so much the entire valley was flooded and he could go not further.  He waited for 3 days and nights in hopes they the water would go down.  Suddenly the sky turned from blue to yellow and a dragon flew down and drank the water.  What he left became the Yulong river and he because the bridge over it.  So the scholar was able to continue his journey to Beijing.

It is possible to take a full day tour along the river by bicycle and see many sights.  Some of the things you will see are the Yulong Bridge, Fuli Bridge, Dragon Bridge, Jiuxian village and Yi Ma village.  You will also be able to go to nearby Moon Hill, Big Banyan tree and the water caves.  You can also take a leisurely bamboo raft ride on the river.

MOON HILL

Moon Hill is a limestone pinnacle (karst) with a moon shaped hole.  From different places around the hill you can see different phases of the moon.  In the 1970¡¯s the USA President Nixon climb to the top of Moon Hill.  You to can climb to the top for a fantastic view of the valley below.

WATER CAVES

There are several water caves in the area around Yangshuo.  All with underground rivers and most with relaxing mud baths.  Some are very primitive without special lighting. While others have the full commercial look with lights and music to set the mood.  All have fantastic natural sculptured rocks.  You will see images of swimming fish, Buddha, dogs, lovers, etc. One of the most popular caves is near the ancient village of Longmen very close to Moon hill.

BIG BANYAN TREE

Big Banyan tree is the oldest tree in the Yangshuo area.  It is believed to be over 1400 years old.  Many of it branches have returned to the ground to become roots.  It is a unique site to see.  It is said that if you walk around the tree you will become rich and live to be more then 99 years old.  Near the tree is a small lake that you can go rafting on.  There is also a wonderful museum with nature rock sculptures and other things to see.

DRAGON BRIDGE

Dragon Bridge was built in 1912.  It is a very impressive bridge.  It is one of Guangxi¡¯s biggest bridges at about 59 meters long and 5 meters wide and 9 meter long.
